Induction of abortion by intravenous infusions of prostaglandin F2α

Summary

The efficacy and side effects of intravenously administered prostaglandin F2α as an abortifacient has been examined in 12 patients desiring abortion between the 12th and 18th week of pregnancy. A successful effect resulted in only 2 cases following 2×10 hourly prostaglandin infusions (25–100 μg/min). Most of the patients experienced undesirable side effects. It is concluded that intravenous infusion of prostaglandin F2α is unsuitable as an abortifacient in progressed pregnancy.

Zusammenfassung

Die Wirksamkeit und Nebenwirkungen einer Abortinduktion mit intravenösen Prostaglandin F2α-Infusionen wurde bei 12 Schwangeren in der 12.–18. Schwangerschaftswoche untersucht. Mit 2×10stündigen Infusionen (Prostaglandin-Dosierung 25–100 μg/min) wurde nur in 2 Fällen ein Erfolg erzielt. Bei fast allen Patientinnen wurden unerwünschte Nebenwirkungen registriert. Es wird daraus geschlossen, daß intravenöse Prostaglandin F2α-Infusionen zur Abortinduktion bei fortgeschrittener Schwangerschaft ungeeignet sind.
