Summary
70 adult female albino rats were divided in groups of 10 animals each and subjected to proestrous surgery as follows: Group I (control)—laparotomy and parauterine implantation of a muscle strip; group II—total extirpation of the uterus; group III—semicastration; group IV—semicastration and total extirpation of the uterus; animals in group V were semicastrated and a proestrous uterus was implanted; in group VI semicastration and total extirpation of the uterus were accompanied by parauterine implantation of 2 proestrous uteri; in group VII implantation of 2 proestrous uteri was done 8 weeks following semicastration and total extirpation of the uterus.
In 20 additional animals surgery was performed during diestrus. This consisted in semicastration and total extirpation of the uterus in group VIII and semicastration with total extirpation of the uterus and simultaneous implantation of 2 diestrous uteri in group IX.
Vaginal smears were obtained daily for 4 weeks prior to and 8 weeks after surgery and the cycle intervals as well as the duration of estrus were recorded. 8 weeks following surgery the endocrine glands were removed, weighed and examined histologically.
In all animals subjected to surgery the cycle intervals were found to be prolonged postoperatively with return to normal interval length occurring after approximately 6 weeks. All semicastrated animals developed hypertrophy of the remaining ovary. On histologic examination all specimens were found to be normal even after additional implantation of proestrous and diestrous uteri. However, semicastration was seen to produce a prolongation of the estrous phase, while additional implantation of proestrous uteri reversed this tendency. Both of these findings were statistically significant. Additional implantation of diestrous uteri, by contrast, did not entail any tangible effects. These observations are suggestive of a phase-dependent regulatory effect of the uterus on the estrous cycle.
