Summary
For the districts of Nordwürttemberg and Südwürttemberg-Hohenzollern in the southwestern part of the Federal Republic with about 5.1 million inhabitants datas concerning the incidence of carcinoma of the cervix are available for the period from 1 April 1969 to 31 March 1970.
Of the 643 notified cases 227 (35.3%) were classified as stadium 0 (carcinoma in situ) of the International Classification, 13 (2.0% of all cases respectively 3.1% of the 416 invasive cases) as stadium IV.
67.9% of all cases were diagnosed by 21% of all participitating hospitals.
32.0% of all cases were detected by preventive examinations, of stadium 0 57.3%, of stadium I–IV 18.0%.
The range of carcinoma in situ cases in the nine hospitals with more than 20 cases in the given period was between 6 and 60%.
The overall incidence was 15.9 per 100000 with a maximum of 44.2 per 100000 in the age group from 50 to 55, the incidence of preinvasive cases 8.6 per 100000 with a maximum of 25.2 per 100000 in the age group from 35 to 40.
96.4% of all cases were histologically proven.
When the figures were broken down to counties no firm correlation was to be found between morbidity and mortality.
In small villages the overall incidence as well as the incidence of invasive cases was as high as expected.
It is estimated that about 80% of all existing cases could be notified.
The registration of cases of the cancer of the cervix in the two districts is continued.
