The effects of a grain boundary on the compositional fluctuations inherent in the oxidation of Fe-10Cr-34Ni

Abstract

The oxide scales which form at and around a grain boundary in an Fe-10Cr-34Ni alloy when it is oxidized in air at 600°C are described. The ways in which new scale types are found which are dissimilar from the three scales seen in bulk clarifies the reasons why more than one oxidation mechanism is generally seen. The changes in oxidation process around a grain boundary, where there is easy ingress of oxidant, are further discussed in relation both to the instabilities inherent in the oxidation process generally and to the changes in oxidation process which would be expected to occur in bulk after longer exposure times.
