Thermomolecular corrections to vapor pressure measurements of3He

Abstract

We have made accurate measurements of the thermomolecular correction to3He vapor pressures in long, stainless steel tubes, using an absolute method. The results are consistent with the Weber-Schmidt equation, and give support to the view that this equation may be of more general validity than suggested by Watkins and co-workers at Mound Laboratories. This result is discussed in terms of the phenomenological gas-wall interactions. In addition, we have also found that the two-tube differential pressure method suggested by Watkins and co-workers lacks sufficient reliability for high-precision3He vapor pressure thermometry at the lowest temperatures.
