Metal Science and Heat Treatment Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

The PAP-9 furnace, ensuring even heating of castings with a temperature differential not over ±2°C, has a substantial advantage over the resistance shaft furnaces presently used for heat treating magnesium alloy parts.

  2. 2.

The PAP-9 fulfills the requirements for high-quality heat treatment for magnesium castings and can be recommended for wide use.

  3. 3.

With the PAP-9 furnace it is possible to use a single heat treatment for magnesium castings with wall thicknesses from 10 to 40 mm (quenching temperature 420°C, holding 8 h, cooling in air) and thus cut the treatment time in half.
