Conclusions

1.
The character of the deformation and fracture of interlayers of FeSi between stronger materlals depends on the thickness of the interlayer. In thick interlayers considerable plastic deformation develops in the process of elongation, which leads to brittle fracture of the sample. With increasing thickness of the interlayer the effect of contact hardening increases, as the result of which the fracture is brittle.

2.
With thin soft interlayers of FeSi between harder materials one observes a "softening effect" of the boundary areas of the base metal and subsequent strain hardening.
-
3.
Thin interlayers of FeSi between softer materials are deformed at stresses below the yield strength of monolithic samples of FeSi. At identical stresses the degree of deformation of the hard interlayer increases with decreasing thickness of the interlayer.
