Abstract

The free-surface profile near a perpendicular rectilinear vortex is studied with classical hydrodynamics. Numerical values and approximate analytic expressions are derived. For pure4He atT=0 K, the dimple has a depth ≈69.5Å and a radius ≈4.26×104 Å at half depth. The addition of3He impurities increases the central depth. Possible detection of vortex lines with phasecontrast techniques is discussed.
