Conclusions

  1. 1.

The aluminum coating on cast iron, as on steel [1, 2], consists of two zones — a light gray surface zone and light transition zone.

  2. 2.

The transition (light) zone has a high hardness due to hardening of α phase by silicon.

  3. 3.

The transition zone contains, along with FeAl and the α solid solution, Fe3AlC3, which evidently also increases the hardness of the transition zone.
