Conclusions

After welding of steel 45 and R18 (without annealing) no noticeable redistribution of carbon occurs. After welding with subsequent annealing at 860°C for 6 h and 740°C for 4 h one observes substantial redistribution of carbon in the welded zone, steel 45 being decarburized and steel R18 carburized.

Comparison of the diffusion coefficients calculated by the autoradiographic method with the data in the literature indicates that the autoradiographic method can be used to determine diffusion coefficients in a system of such complex composition. The variation of the microhardness in the welded zone matches the redistribution of carbon in this zone.
