NQR study of the α-β ordering transition in solid nitrogen as a function of pressure

Abstract

The α-β phase boundary for solid nitrogen has been measured with high precision between zero and 3.32 kbar using nuclear quadrupole resonance to detect the transition. From an application of the Clapeyron-Clausius equation, the volume discontinuity at zero pressure is deduced to be 0.311±0.025 cm3/mole. The variation of the nuclear quadrupole resonance frequency along the phase boundary reveals that the transition occurs for a nearly constant value of the order parameter characterizing the molecular librations.
