Thermoelectric power of pure gallium. I. Temperature dependence

Abstract

The thermoelectric power of high-purity gallium single crystals, oriented along the three principal directions of the orthorhombic lattice, has been measured between 4.2 and 1.4 K by means of the superconducting potentiometer developed by Clarke. For theA andB axes the thermopower has the same temperature dependence as the lattice specific heat, indicating the dominance of the phonon-drag term. The thermopower for theC axis changes sign from positive to negative around 3.4 K, and its temperature variation is extremely complicated. No definite conclusions could be drawn from the results for this axis.
