Abstract

We describe a calculation of the stress dependence of the superconducting transition temperature of non-transition metals using the McMillan equation. We include effects due to the stress dependence of the pseudopotential and the electronic band structure density of states, and we show that the effective Grüneisen parameter entering the calculation can be approximated by the high-temperature value of the lattice Grüneisen parameter. Our numerical results are in reasonable agreement with recent measurements on the influence of hydrostatic pressure and uniaxial stress on the transition temperatures of simple metals.
