Abstract
Energy transfer from solid to helium vapor by desorption of surface-bound helium atoms is examined. The ideas presented give a good qualitative explanation of recent phonon reflection data, and preliminary numerical estimates of the transition probability are in order of magnitude agreement with observation, provided the influence of surface waves is included.
