Maximum growth rates of magnetoatmospheric instabilities

Abstract

Simple bounds on the growth rates of magneto-atmospheric instabilities are derived, both for perturbations along and perpendicular to a horizontal magnetic field. The physical significance of a singular level for stable modes is briefly discussed.
