Abstract
The transit time of a pulsar signal is influenced by the density fluctuations of the interstellar plasma. This effect is calculated in the one-dimensional and spherically symmetrical case, using a WKB-type approximation for the transverse electric field. The influence is found to be small compared to Lerche's result, and the difference is explained by the fact that Lerche's formula refers to a ‘mean signal’.
