A note on the equation of state of a scalar field

Abstract

The energy momentum tensor of a scalar field is considered as being that of a perfect fluid with equation of statep=p(ρ). In the extreme case that the field energy is purely kinetic,p=p, whereas if it is purely potential,p=−ρ.
