Conclusions

  1. 1.

A brittle ω-phase can form in the weld metal of a two-phase, medium alloy titanium alloy VT6 upon aging after solutionizing. The ω-phase results in an increased hardness of the weld and a fall of its ductility and toughness.

  2. 2.

The ω-phase in VT6 alloy welds has the character of an intermediate phase formed in the first stage of decomposition of the metastable β-phase. A weld metal of a comosition close to that of the base metal contained a maximum amount of ω-phase; a miniumum of ω was found in welds made with an unalloyed titanium electrode VT1.

  3. 3.

The ω-phase was practically eliminated by long-time aging of solution treated two-phase welds. Such a treatment significantly improved the plastic properties and toughness of the weld metal.

  4. 4.

Studies with an optical microscope at the usual magnifications did not reveal the changes taking place in the structure of aged welds. The detection of small amounts of dispersed ω-phase by X-ray methods was also difficult. The ω-phase in a solution treated weld after short artificial aging is best discovered by electron microscopy.
