Abstract
The pressure dependence of the dehydration reaction of H2CO3 was measured in acidic aqueous solution for pressures up to 1 kbar using a high-pressure stopped-flow instrument. The corresponding volume of activation was found to be 6.4±0.4 cm3-mol−1 at 25°C and 0.5 ionic strength. Volume equation calculations result in a value of −9.9±1.9cm3-mol−1 for the volume of activation for the hydrolysis of CO2 under the same conditions. For the first time, the reaction mechanism can be interpreted in terms of dissociative and associative modes, respectively. These data are used to construct an overall reaction volume profile.
