A new test for Alfvén waves in interplanetary space

Abstract

A method of testing for the existence of Alfvén waves using only magnetic-field data is given. It is shown that cross-spectral analysis of the magnetic-field components can be a useful tool in distinguishing between Alfvén waves and magnetosonic waves in interplanetary space.
