The ellipsoidal variables

III. Circularization and synchronization

Abstract

By considering the degree of orbital circularity and synchronism an estimate of the degree of tidal interaction in the ellipsoidal variable systems is attained. We find that the orbits are (with a few exceptions) circularized and synchronized forP(d)≲2. The highly inhomogeneous nature of the ellipsoidal variable class becomes clear within the framework of analysis and we discuss the evolutionary status of the more extreme systems.
