Birkhoff's theorem in a conformally-invariant scalar field theory

Abstract

A result having formal similarity to Birkhoff's theorem in general relativity is proved, both in vacuum as well as in the presence of electromagnetic fields, in a conformally-invariant scalar field theory with trace-free energy-momentum tensor for the special case when the scalar field is independent of time.
