Electric charge and acceleration of suprathermal grains

Abstract

Dust grains expelled from cool stars into the interstellar medium at speeds ≳108 cm s−1 are charged by secondary electron emission to potentials in the range 8–40 V. The condition for the acceleration of such charged grains by the Fermi process are discussed.
