Abstract
The modulational instability of a finite amplitude electron-cyclotron wave along the external magnetic field is reconsidered. Accounting for relativistic electron mass variation nonlinearity and the radiation pressure-driven electrostatic fluctuations, new regimes for the relativistic modulational instability are obtained. Particular emphasis is placed for the case in which the term resulting from relativistic electron mass modulation cancels the term arising from the diffraction of the electron-cyclotron wave.
