Alternatives to all-argon plasmas in inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS): an overview

The advantages and disadvantages of the addition of molecular (O2, N2, H2), or other gases (Xe, He) to argon ICPs for mass spectrometry are briefly reviewed. Successful analysis of organic materials, reduced spectral and matrix interferences, and improved detection limits are some of the advantages realized. It is concluded that mixed gas ICPs have a promising future in ICP-MS.
