Abstract

A scaling parameter for He II thermal counterflow is developed from a consideration of the stability of the normal fluid component in the presence of superfluid vortex production. Observations of superfluid “entrainment” are combined with a reinterpretation of the “mutual friction force” to define the scaling parameter which is shown to be independent of temperature and geometry at the critical heat current.
