Abstract
Certain essential formal similarities between the modelling of photometric maculation effects and spectrometric Doppler imaging are pointed out. This parallelism opens the way to a methodological approach to Doppler imaging on quite parallel lines to the authors' studies of stars that exhibit photometric maculation waves. The information content of either form of data set is thence compared.
