Abstract

Expressions are derived for the first and second order statistical properties of speckle formed in the image of a diffuse object when the illumination is both temporally and spatially partially coherent. Sunlight falls into this illumination category, and we are therefore able to deduce conditions under which sunlight speckle will show best contrast.
