Abstract

A general method is introduced for modelling coherent radiative and propagational processes at optical and near-optical frequencies in degenerate transitions of gaseous atomic and molecular systems. A ‘Blochtensorial’ expansion is used to describe the coherent behaviour of the system, and is applicable to P-, Q- and R-type transitions. Time-dependent solutions of the high-order multipole Maxwell-Bloch equations are obtained for irradiation of the systems by both linearly polarized and circularly polarized incident fields. These lead to important predictions of pulse evolution behaviour in degenerate amplifier and absorber systems.
