Summary

Ethylenediamine and 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedione react in the presence of divalent nickel, cobalt and copper salts to form the complexes of a 14-membered N4-tetradentate macrocycle. These macrocyclic complexes obtainedvia metal template synthesis are of the type [M(Ph4-[14]-tetraene-N4)X2] where M = NiII, CoII or CuII; X = Cl, Br, NO3 or NCS. The coordination takes place through the imine nitrogen atoms which are bridged by 1,3-diphenyl-1,3-propanedione moieties. These macrocyclic complexes were characterised by conductance measurements, molecular weight determination, magnetic, electronic and i.r. spectral studies.
