Summary
The kinetics of the oxidation of [CrIII(HY)(H2O)] (Y = EDTA) by IO −4 to yield CrVI have been investigated. The reaction exhibited a first-order dependence on each reactant concentration. The second-order rate constant, k2, varied with [H+] according to equation (1): 1/k2 = a + b[H+ + c[H+]2
A mechanism in which [CrIIIY(OH)2−] and H3IO 2−6 are the reactive species fitted the results. It is proposed that electrontransfer proceedsvia an inner-sphere mechanism with the hydroxo-ligand of the chromium(III) complex bridging the two reactants.
