Preparation and characterisation of some transition metal complexes with the tetraaza-16-tetraene macrocycles; dibenzo(f,n)-2,10-dimethyl-4,12-diphenyl-1,5,9,13-tetraazacyclohexadeca-1,4,9,12-tetraene

Summary

An efficient template synthesis of new macrocycles is described.m-Phenylenediamine and 1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione react in the presence of anhydrous metal salts to form macrocyclic complexes which were characterised by i.r., u.v. and visible spectra, conductance measurements, molecular weight and magnetic studies. The complexes are distorted octahedral of the type M(Me2Ph2[16]1,4,9,12-tetraene-N4)X2 where M=CuII, CoII and NiII; X=Cl, Br, NO3 or NCS. The ligand coordinates through the azomethine group as bridged 1-phenyl-1,3-butanedione moieties.
