Method of poles for multilayer thin-film waveguides

The mode indices of a waveguide are found as the poles of the reflectance in the superstrate or the substrate. Complicated boundary condition problems are avoided by using the recursion relations for the reflectance. The method is especially suited for computer waveguide design.
