A study of the properties of gold black

Abstract

The properties of gold layers deposited on nitrocellulose backings by vaporizing the gold in a hydrogen atmosphere are investigated. It is shown that the transmission and reflection of infrared radiation by nonselectively absorbing gold black are related to its conductivity. In the first approximation this relationship can be described by the classical equations of interaction of an electromatnetic wave with a homogeneous conductor whose magnetic and dielectric permeabilities are equal to those of free space. Filter layers must possess a greater variety of spectral properties than previously indicated in the literature. It was found that the absorptance of the black diminished with increasing rate of atomization. The volume concentration of gold in blacks and filter layers was found to lie in the 0. 2–0.7 % range.
