Abstract
We have studied the spatial range of the Raman enhancement of CaF2-roughened silver samples under UHV conditions. Besides a well characterized long-range enhancement we found a pronounced “first layer effect” restricted to directly adsorbed molecules, which cannot be understood within a classical electromagnetic enhancement mechanism. This short-range enhancement is quenched by oxygen passivation of the samples.
