Abstract
Mesoanthracenecarboxylic acid solutions were found to have two fluorescence bands: a shortwave structured band of the ordinary anthracene type and a diffuse band some distance from the former toward the longer waves region. From a study of the effects of various factors on the fluorescence and absorption spectra it was concluded that the shortwave band was associated with the radiation of the anionic and monomer forms of anthracenecarboxylic acids, while the longwave band was attributable to the radiation of dimers in an excited state rearranged in a configuration similar to the structure of excimers.
