Efferent neural control in the eyes of orb weaving spiders

Summary

Efferent spikes have been recorded from the optic nerves of the orb weaving spiders,Argiope bruennichii andA. amoena. The frequency of efferent spikes in the optic nerve indicates a diurnal periodicity which is maintained in constant darkness. Increased efferent spikes in the optic nerve have two distinct effects on the eyes' responses to light stimulation. Resting potentials of the photoreceptor cells are rapidly hyperpolarized by increased efferent discharges. At the same time their saturated photoreceptor potential amplitude increases. These quick changes are directly mediated by the efferent axons. In addition, increased efferent spike rates more slowly augment the receptor cells' sensitivity to light stimulation, i.e. lower their thresholds.
