Summary
Phosphonomycin, a new antibacterial antibiotic, reaches maximal activity in the presence of serum. It is demonstrated that this activating effect occurs in the presence of both, epidermal and dermal extracts. In Warburg manometrical studies on proliferating staphylococci, the bacteriostatic effect of phosphonomycin was found to be significantly increased when epidermal or dermal extract was added to the test medium. The addition of protein-containing extracts caused an increased oxygen consumption of proliferating bacteria limited for the first hour of incubation. — As substances from the epidermis and the corium are capable of activating phosphonomyein, this antibiotic might develop its optimal activity by topical application, too.
