Summary
In connection with laparotomies an incision about 1 cm in length and severing the fibres of the human rectus abdominis muscle was made. The experimental subjects were in combined narcosis during the operation.
Histological methods revealed polymorphonuclear leukocytes on the margins of the injured muscle fibres for the first time in wounds of 20 minutes' age; at the same time leukocyte plugs had formed in the blood vessels. Macrophages and histiocytes could be seen in wounds aged 45 minutes and older on the marging of the necrotic fibres.
Inflammation reaction became manifest in the human striated muscle after the same time as in the guinea-pig.
Morphological changes due to retraction of muscle fibres could not alone be considered a sign of the vitality of the organism as a whole. Inflammation reaction produced by existing circulation was considered to be the first positive sign of vitality.
