Summary

In this study of more than 250 cases of retromuscular expander implantations after mammary amputations, we came to the conclusion that primary implantation is now just as successful as secondary implantation. The major problem is infection which occurred mostly in expander cases with a distant valve. As a result of the experience gained in this study, tissue expansion is considered to be the best method for immediate breast reconstruction. The skin-muscle-flap will be studied in a future series.
