Summary
After a brief description of certain fundamentals of the theory of communication, the AA. describe a family in psychotherapy. They examine the particular type of functioning in the family system, and offer a definition of the system which they consider rigidly complementary and unsatisfying. They also find it highly stable, since each partner is reassured by the other in the maintenance of the way of relating acquired in their original learning systems. — In the analysis of the transactions with the partner, the designated patient (the husband) seems to constantly end up in the inferior position (one down), while the wife, the apparently sane partner, in a position of superiority (one up). — However, the presence of obsessional symptoms in the husband lead to a concealed inversion in the relationship, which consolidates the homeostasis of the system. — In fact, the needs of the “sickness” (rituals, scrupules, meticulosities) allow the husband, in the end, to set the rules in the rapport; and the wife, to tolerate the defeat since it is inflicted on her not by her husband, but by his “sickness”.
