Summary
The double mutantpolA recB ofEscherichia coli K12 which is normally inviable can be “rescued” by a third mutationsbc which results in the appearance of an ATP-independent deoxyribonuclease. Viability ofpolA strains apparently requires either the ATP-dependent deoxyribonuclease which is missing inrecB mutants or the ATP-independent deoxyribonuclease which is present inrecB sbc mutants.
