Summary

Static pressure-volume diagrammes (pV-diagrammes) were established for isolated lungs of the rat. When the lungs had been ventilated for a longer period of time, the compliance as well as the hysteresis showed a decrease. These changes were the more marked the larger the tidal volume and the lower the end-expiratory pressure. The changes in thepV-diagramme point to changes in the properties of the air-tissue surface in the alveoli with high ventilation and particularly with intrapulmonary end-expiratory pressure 0 leading to collapse of alveoli. ThepV-curves showed an increased compliance and a decrease of the hysteresis after the inhalation of cigarette smoke. The decrease of the hysteresis under the influence of cigarette smoke can only in part be attributed to the increased ventilation.
