Summary
Two weeks' ingestion of ethanol (3 g/kg, twice daily) caused hypertrophy of zona glomerulosa and activated its cells in the rat. Similar but weaker activation was seen in zona fasciculata. Ethanol could subside the involution of zona glomerulosa caused by hypertonic saline. Hypertrophy of zona glomerulosa was not seen, when insuline (10 I.U./kg, twice daily) was given with ethanol. Zona fasciculata, however, reacted very strongly to this treatment with hypertrophy. The effect of ethanol on zona glomerulosa is propably based on its tendency to produce hyperpotassemy and to lower the plasma sodium concentration and the combined effect of insulin and ethanol on their „hypoglycemic synergism”.
