Summary

Husbands of 20 alcoholic and 20 depressive female patients were interviewed about their wives' social role performance and about the social consequences of their illness. The interview (based on the Social Behaviour Assessment Scale), covered a 3–4 week period before hospital admission and inquired into the frequency and duration of various family problems, as well as the reactions of other family members to these problems. No inter-group differences were found in the extent of patients' deviant behaviour or in the severity of the associated difficulties of other family members. Questions on subjective aspects of the family situation, however, elicited greater distress among the husbands of the alcoholic group. Husbands of the depressive patients appeared to be more resigned in the face of their family difficulties, a finding partly related to their higher average age. It is concluded that the findings represent differences between the two groups of husbands in their attribution of responsibility for the patients' illnesses and their consequences.
