Abstract
Features of the α ↔ β phase transition of germanium telluride in nonequilibrium Te-Ge alloys have been studied. Results of a thermal analysis of these alloys affords a graphical visualization of the a ↔ β transformation, as well as the temperature range over which polymorphic forms of GeTe are stable. It is shown that even at cooling rates exceeding 106 K/sec, β-GeTe does not yield to quenching. Based on results of high temperature x-ray analysis, and electron and optical microscopy, we propose that the β-GeTe → α-GeTe transition is a martensitic-type transition.
