Summary
The peripheral myelinated nerve fibre was investigated by means of a light microscopical technique using plastic embedded 1 μ sections. The investigations were carried out on the sciatic nerve of the rat and were completed by electron microscopical observations. Special interest was focussed on the paranodal apparatus and the Schmidt-Lantermann clefts.
We observed dome-shaped protrusions of the myelin sheath, which belong to the paranodal apparatus. They end just beside the naked portion of the node of Ranvier. In the paranodal region the cytoplasm of the Schwann cell is augmented and fills the small pointed gaps between the protrusions of the myelinated nerve fibres. Thus the Schwann cytoplasm is distributed discontinuously along the surface of the myelin sheath.
In cross sections of plastic embedded specimens the Schmidt-Lantermann clefts appear as two distinct concentric rings of myelin. The inner and the outer ring represent a constant amount of myelin material. The different thickness of the two myelin rings is in relation to the plane where the cross section of the funnel-shaped cleft is made. Three concentric rings of the myelin sheath resulting from a special organization of the Schmidt-Lantermann cleft are found rarely. They seem to be more frequent in materials draught by weight before fixation.
