Summary
The Young-modulus of gels of cross-linked polystyrene and of cross-linked polymethylmethacrylate (PMME) with various solvents was measured in the temperature range from −50 to +90° C. In the range below +30° C the equilibrium value of the modulus of the PMME-gels displayed a step in the normally linear temperature dependence. In the range of this step a change of the structure of the polymer material is assumed. The interpretation of the molecular mechanism agrees with the thermodynamic analysis. Therewith a new method is offered for investigation of transitions in polymer-solvent systems in the liquid state.
