The formation of bromohydrins from 3-acetoxy-Δ5-steroids has been studied. In addition to the 5α-bromo-6β-hydroxy compounds, their structural isomers, the 6β-bromo-5α-hydroxy compounds, are obtained. A mechanism for their formation is proposed.
