Iron in skin biopsies

  • Published:
Archiv für dermatologische Forschung Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

A simple practical and reliable method for the determination of the iron content in skin sections obtained by punch biopsy is developed for diagnostie and follow-up studies.

The mean value of the iron content in the chest-wall skin of normal persons is 65 ± 25 µmol Fe/100 g dry weight.

In cases of haemochromatosis and symptomatic porphyria cutanea tarda the iron content of the skin is significantly increased.
